Content pruning is an evidence-led decision to keep, improve, consolidate, redirect, archive, or remove a page. Do not delete content merely because it has low traffic: a page may support customers, citations, internal journeys, or a small but valuable audience.

Build the Inventory

For each URL, collect:

  • purpose and target audience;
  • organic impressions, referrals, conversions, and links;
  • AI citations or mentions where observable;
  • freshness and factual risk;
  • overlap with other pages;
  • internal links and business dependencies;
  • canonical, index, and status signals;
  • owner and last meaningful review.

Use the Decision Tree

Keep when the page serves a distinct, current purpose and evidence supports its existence.

Improve when the intent is valuable but the answer, evidence, or format is weak.

Consolidate when several pages answer the same task and one comprehensive source would be clearer.

Redirect when the old page has a close replacement and no longer needs to exist.

Archive or remove when information is obsolete, risky, unsupported, and lacks a suitable replacement.

Consolidate Without Losing Meaning

Choose the best destination based on intent, evidence, and links—not simply the highest traffic. Merge distinctive information, update references, use a permanent redirect, update internal links and sitemaps, and retain a change log.

Monitor the Outcome

Before the change, capture page groups and prompt baselines. Afterward, monitor crawl errors, selected canonicals, impressions, citations, referrals, conversions, and support impact. Allow for recrawl and reprocessing.

If performance falls, investigate whether useful intent was lost before reversing the decision.

There is no universal rule. Removal may reduce clutter or risk, but it can also erase useful evidence and long-tail support.

Should outdated research be redirected?
