Generative Engine Optimization Services: Scope, Process and Proof

What a GEO engagement actually changes, bounded by what Google says is possible. Includes the measured research on which content levers move AI visibility, our own first-party data on what separates cited businesses from invisible ones, and the measurement protocol most providers never publish.

Generative engine optimization services are the work of getting a brand into the sources that AI systems synthesize their answers from. A credible engagement covers four things: technical eligibility, the content models actually draw on, the third-party evidence that corroborates it, and a measurement protocol that can tell whether any of it moved. Everything else is decoration.

This page describes what we do, how we measure it, and — because the category is not good at this part — what a GEO service cannot promise.

Start with what Google actually says

Before any provider explains their proprietary method, read Google's own documentation on AI features and your website. It is unusually direct:

"There are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, nor other special optimizations necessary… You don't need to create new machine readable files, AI text files, or markup to appear in these features. There's also no special schema.org structured data that you need to add."

And on outcomes:

"Just because a page meets all requirements, best practices, and complies with the policies, doesn't mean that Google will crawl, index, or serve its content. Indexing and serving isn't guaranteed."

Two consequences follow, and they shape everything below. There is no hidden switch — anyone selling a secret GEO file or a special markup is selling something Google says does not exist. And no vendor controls the output, because the systems are not ours to control.

What a service can change is the input: whether you are eligible, what the models find when they look, and how well corroborated it is. That is a narrower promise than the category usually makes. It is also the only honest one.

Why it matters now

At Google I/O in May 2026, Sundar Pichai said AI Overviews had passed 2.5 billion monthly active users, and that AI Mode had surpassed one billion monthly active users within a year of launch. A synthesized answer is no longer an edge case in how people find businesses — for a large share of queries it is the whole result.

The commercial consequence is that the question changed. It is no longer "where do we rank" but "when a model assembles an answer about our category, are we one of the sources it assembles it from."

What the research says actually works

The founding academic work on this is GEO: Generative Engine Optimization (Aggarwal et al., KDD '24), which tested content-level interventions across GEO-bench — 10,000 queries drawn from nine sources and 25 domains — and measured visibility two ways, by position-adjusted word count and by a subjective impression score.

The results are specific enough to plan against:

  • Citing sources, adding quotations and adding statistics were the top three methods, producing relative improvements of 30–40% on position-adjusted word count and 15–30% on subjective impression.
  • Improving fluency and readability also gained 15–30%. Clarity is not cosmetic.
  • Keyword stuffing performed worst. In the paper's evaluation against Perplexity, it ran 10% worse than doing nothing at all.
  • Effectiveness varied by domain, which the authors say underlines the need for domain-specific optimization rather than one universal recipe.

One caveat that matters and that you will rarely see quoted alongside the numbers: the paper's main experiments generated answers with GPT-3.5 and were published in 2024. The durable finding is the mechanism — evidence-dense, quotable, well-sourced content gets selected — not the exact percentages. Treat anyone quoting "up to 40%" as a 2026 forecast with caution.

What our first-party data adds

We ran two studies on 117 California businesses this year, and both published their arithmetic.

The first crawled 3,942 pages and produced an uncomfortable result for the way this service is usually sold. Businesses that AI never cited were technically indistinguishable from the ones it did: crawl accessibility of 94.1 against 94.6. What separated them was provider transparency — 80 against 52.5. Named practitioners with real credentials, on their own pages, stating what they actually do.

So if a proposal is mostly schema and crawl hygiene, our crawl says that is not the variable. It is table stakes you probably already meet.

The second matched 14,583 referring domains against a media database and found earned media placements and AI citations correlate at a Spearman ρ of 0.58. Every business in the set with five or more placements was cited by AI. The full dataset is published as CSV and JSON under CC BY 4.0, so you can check it.

Earned media, expert commentary and independent references — the ρ = 0.58 lever. Models weight what other people say about you more heavily than what you say about yourself, which is why this is the slowest and most valuable part of the work.

How we measure it — the protocol, published

We reviewed the highest-ranking GEO service pages in this market while researching this one. None of them published a measurement methodology. Several quoted increases of several hundred or several thousand percent with no sample size, no timeframe, no platform and no baseline stated.

Here is the thing those numbers hide: generative answers vary between runs. Ask the same model the same question twice and you can get different sources. A single before-and-after screenshot is therefore not evidence of anything, and any provider presenting one either does not know that or is relying on you not to.

So we fix the conditions and record them. Every observation carries the prompt, the platform, the date, the location and the sources cited. Prompts are run repeatedly per cycle rather than once, and results are read as a distribution rather than a reading. The baseline is taken before any work starts and preserved unedited.

GEO services pay back fastest where buyers ask AI consequential, comparative questions before they ever contact you — professional services, healthcare, financial services and considered B2B purchases. The common factor is real expertise that is currently undocumented, which is the raw material the work depends on.

It suits you poorly if there is no expertise to publish. If a business cannot supply evidence, credentials or a genuine point of view, restructuring its paragraphs will not manufacture authority, and we will say so at the audit stage rather than after six months.

What is not included

Guaranteed placement in any AI answer. Removal of an existing answer you dislike. Control over what a model says between measurement cycles. Nobody can sell these, because per Google's own documentation serving is not guaranteed even when every requirement is met.
