Build a reliable free AI visibility baseline using official platform reports, manual prompt checks, crawl tests and a governed spreadsheet.

Free AI visibility checks can answer focused questions: whether a brand appeared for a prompt, which sources were shown, whether crawlers can access a page and whether measurable referral traffic arrived. They cannot produce a dependable market-wide “visibility score” from one query.

A useful free stack combines official platform reports, manual answer checks and a disciplined spreadsheet. The method matters more than the tool count.

What you can measure for free

Google generative AI impressions

Search Console's generative AI report shows impressions from AI Overviews and AI Mode for eligible properties with access. It includes page, country, date and device dimensions. It does not expose prompts, citations or answer position.

Microsoft AI citations

Bing Webmaster Tools' AI Performance preview reports total citations, average cited pages, sampled grounding queries and page-level citation activity across supported Microsoft experiences. Microsoft explicitly says these metrics do not indicate ranking, authority or placement.

AI referral traffic

GA4 now documents an AI Assistants channel and custom-channel workflow. Referral traffic captures sessions that arrive through trackable links; it does not measure zero-click mentions or recommendations.

Crawl and index checks

Search Console URL Inspection, Bing Webmaster Tools, robots.txt testing, server logs and direct HTML inspection help diagnose whether a page can be found and rendered.

Manual answer evidence

Public or existing-access AI interfaces can be checked manually. Record the exact prompt, surface, date, model or mode where visible, answer, sources and outcome. Do not automate a service in violation of its terms.

Build a free prompt sheet

Create columns for:

  • prompt ID;
  • buyer stage;
  • location or persona;
  • target brand and competitors;
  • engine;
  • run date;
  • mention;
  • citation;
  • recommendation;
  • cited URL;
  • answer evidence;
  • reviewer;
  • notes.

Separate benchmark prompts from experimental prompts. Run the benchmark set on a fixed cadence and avoid editing prompts mid-series.

Repeat before interpreting

Generative answers vary. For important prompts, use repeated runs and report a rate rather than a single yes/no observation.

For example:

  • mention rate = runs mentioning the brand / total valid runs;
  • citation rate = runs citing the domain / total valid runs;
  • recommendation rate = runs positively including the brand in the requested shortlist / valid runs.

Document invalid runs, access failures and personalised contexts.

Free does not mean unbiased

Free checkers may:

  • use an undisclosed prompt set;
  • run only one engine;
  • return cached or simulated results;
  • convert one observation into a score;
  • capture email addresses before showing method;
  • promote an agency service.

When manual checks stop working

Upgrade when you need:

  • hundreds of prompts;
  • repeated multi-engine runs;
  • reliable history;

  • alerts and workflow.
